God, the Lord of All (including electronics)
Anyway, I started to think that if we asked for money for Christmas maybe we could afford to buy a new one, so I looked up digital cameras on Amazon and there are all over 150$, which is just too much. Then, I think maybe it can be fixed somehow, even though I have no idea how. I go to google and type in "digital camera LCD screen broken", click on one of the sites and it takes me to some "Fixya" website that has a listing of electronic products. I look up our exact camera, and guess what- several other people have had the same problem. The solutions given are rather weird and I'm not sure what they mean, but they all say something like- "hit the Cybershot logo on the camera." I think to myself, okay whatever, and hit the logo on the camera, turn it on, and viola! the screen now works. I can hardly believe my eyes.

Exciting things I did while away from Blog world
- got my first catering job (I made 120 ginger cookies for a friend's club meeting and got paid for it. This made me very happy)
- learned two crochet stitches
- went to two public library locations 10 times in one week and checked out fifty books (I now owe over three dollars in library fines)
- made and decorated a cake from scratch
- started decorating for Christmas
- kicked, cried, and screamed (stress does this to a person)
- got airline tickets to Idaho for Christmas using mother's credit card.
- Wrote papers and lesson plans, final exams, art projects, and on and on and on....
- That's all I can think of right now. My life is so boring. Yet you keep on reading...
Why it stinks to live more than a day's drive away
- You miss your great grandma's 100th birthday.
- You miss your great grandma's funeral.

Great Grandma Hochstetler
Last year on her 100th birthday.
One-hundred-and-one years old. Last thing she asked for was a Dr. Pepper. Surprising? Nope.

Blog Break Continued...

5k and still alive
The cons were: I got up at 6 am on a Saturday, ran 3.2 miles in the cold, got 74th place (out of 101), and got sore muscles. The pros were: I had a good time with my friends, I got free stuff and free food, I contributed to a good cause, I achieved a personal goal, and I got a "bronze" medal for placing third in my gender/age bracket. I'd say the pros outweigh the cons :)
Here I am with the rest of the girls ( lt-rt: Amanda, Sarah, Karen, and Elisa). You can tell they are all actual runners, unlike me. They all did the 10k and I was super impressed with their hard work and endurance.
Slightly embarrassed for getting a medal for running a slow 10:32/mile race.
Karen is convinced the race will motivate/inspire me to keep running and to join more races.
We will see Karen, we will see....

100 years late
The photos I posted, which are of some of the most unsightly parts of St. Louis, are part of a collection that Jonathan took which he calls "100 years late" in reference to when the city was at its grandest during the 1904 World's Fair. I wanted to put one at the top of my blog to represent my title/description. There are many beautiful places in Saint Louis, but also many not so beautiful places, which is a bit depressing, but such as life. Anyway, as I was looking through them for my blog I could hardly decide which ones to consider because there are many cool ones to choose from. Therefore I will post some more for you to look at and then you can be relieved of my rambling.... Enjoy.
*This just in... another voter, Kelly, for the second photo. So I guess it's 2-1 now :)

The Procastination Gene
I don't have anything interesting going on in my life right now. Hence I will write about house plants. In fact, I will charm you with a poem instead. Even better.
Ode to House Plants
My heart has been broken six times
obssesive crush in 7th grade
one christmas bonsai
one valentine day orchid
one birthday orchid
one jade
and now the sago palm
oh why do you torture me so?
I bought you
I adored you
I loved you
I watered you
I sunned you
And this is how you repay me
Into the trash you now must go
Ode to the Plant Killer
Why do you even bother?
Six down
Three to go
find a new hobby
Is plant killing a gene too?

2nd Day
If you think of it, please pray for our home church, New Hope Baptist, which has been experiencing a lot of loss the past couple weeks. Each week they send us a bulletin with prayer requests, and this week I read that Julie Piper, a wife of one of the pastors of the area Baptist churches died. Also, two members of New Hope died, Shirley Bentsen, and Mason Jenkins. Shirley Bentsen was an older lady who was always so nice to us and helpful to everyone. I heard about Mason from Alicia's blog. Mason was only three years old and suffered from Hurler's Syndrome. You can learn more about him here.
P.S. Thank-you to you commenters for taking the time. All your comments on the last post made my day!

Sage Nelson, Juror
Think of me again tomorrow when I am serving my civic duty in the jury box, trying to sort out all the evidence in my brain. Thankfully the chairs in the jury box are padded so my rear is a bit better today.
p.s. Fall is here! I wore my new coat for the first time today. Yay!

Because I can't think of anything to write about....
Because I think your eyes need a relief from all this rambling text and your heart needs some laughter, I will show you something you may have not known about me. I am totally, pathetically, and unbelievably, UN-photogenic. It's sad really. Jonathan tries so hard to get a good picture of me but it really is a challenge. See so for yourself-
And this isn't even half of the pictures that Jonathan took! He probably took thirty pictures of me that day and got only three or four good ones. This is one of the better ones (probably because it is farther away from my face :)
You didn't think I was going to leave you with those scary images imprinted in your brain, did you?

Lessons Learned (the hard way)
- Don't leave your cheap, little 20$ wal-mart grill, that you begged your husband to let you buy, outside in your backyard for three days after using it. It will get stolen.
- Don't put a bunch of potato peelings in the garbage disposal follwed by the greasy water from the pan that you cooked chicken in. Your sink will get clogged and a plumber will have to come and fix it.
- Don't sell something on e-bay, send it to they buyer, and then throw the reciept from the post-office away. If your package is late or gets lost your buyer will want to have proof that you actually sent the product. Fortunately for me, my buyer eventually got the package (after much frantic worrying about it on my part).

George III
Come on, are you surprised? You know how adorable I think turtles are. The puppets were due on Wednesday. Everyone showed their puppets (turtle, blow fish, rabbit, parrot, elephant, and butterfly) and we critiqued and graded them all. Then we ranked them from best to worst (in a nice way, of course). And guess who's everyone thought was the best? Mine. Duh! How could you not think GeorgeIII was the cutest turtle puppet you ever saw?
In case you forgot, here is GeorgeII.
(GeorgeI was my pet box turtle from long ago who ran away).
Here are the other turtles I have joyfully encountered since living here in Missouri.
Okay, so this one was at the zoo. But the rest were in the wild.
Have a good weekend. And don't worry, I'll be back soon.

Granola
Granola*
Preheat oven to 250 degrees.
Combine in large mixing bowl:
2 cups whole wheat flour
6 cups rolled oats (not quick cookin')
1 cup shredded coconut
1 cup wheat germ
Blend together separately:
1/2 cup water
1 cup oil (I substituted some of the oil for water and it turned out fine)
1 cup honey or corn syrup (I recommend honey; it's better for you)
2 tsp. vanilla
1 Tb. salt
Add blended liquids to dry ingredients and mix thoroughly. Spread out on 2 greased cookie sheets and bake 1 hour, or until dry and golden. Store in covered containers.
Makes 2 1/2 -3 quarts.
Feel free to add in anything that you think would taste good; I added craisins and almonds.

On a more positive note, I have been getting a little bit of much-needed experience working with school-age kids. First off, I started tutoring again. Sadly, my previous tutee, Ariel, moved to Chicago this Summer, therefore I did not get to say good-bye. I was a bit nervous about getting a new kid, but it turned out fine because I got Alex whom I have tutored before. She is a sweet girl and I look forward to working with her this year even though I will miss Ariel.
Here is Alex with me last April- (not the most flattering picture, I know)
Other sad news- I quit the two year-old Sunday School class to get the aforementioned experience and moved up to the 2nd-4th grade class. I will really miss the two-year-olds. You remember how much I loved them (if not, click here). This Sunday was my first day with the older kids, and it was a lot of fun. I am not the main teacher, so I get a break from teaching the Bible lessons, but I get to lead song time which means I had to break out the old guitar. I spent practically the whole day changing the strings and tuning the dang thing.
Also, I have visited my friends from church Mary's and Brenda's classrooms the last couple weeks. They are both third-grade teachers at the same private school. That has been good for me because, frankly, I have been freaking out about student teaching next year. I haven't had a whole lot of experience in the classroom or with school-age kids so I am really starting to get nervous. So basically I am doing everything I can to get more experience to ease my fears a little. I am going to start helping at our church's Sunday night kids' program, and I am looking to either tutor another day or volunteer at another church's after-school program.
While I am on the subject, for one of my classes we will be going to an elementary school for a couple days for the next few weeks. We are learning how to give reading tests/inventories and are going to test them out on students. My first day was Monday, and I was in a fourth grade classroom. It was a lot of fun. First of all, the school we went to was awesome. I immediately decided I want to teach there just by the looks of it (probably can't judge a school by its looks though). The building is super nice and airy with tons of pets. Yeah that's right, animals. Everywhere you go there are fish tanks, and in the hallways I saw a huge parrot, other little birds, a snake, and I only saw part of the school. Outside they have a nice courtyard with a pond, and I hear the kindergarten has a pool. Then I got to work with a fourth-grade girl and she was too cute. Part of our class assignment was to interview our student, and I thought it would be awkward asking her questions like- when is your bedtime? what do your parents do? But it ended up being really enjoyable because she was very talkative and had a very inspiring personality. For instance I asked her if she liked school and she said "Oh, I love school! And I always pay attention in school, for two reasons. First, I want to get a good education, and second, I want to be a teacher when I grow up!" She is a lot of fun, and I will be working with her each time I go to the school.
Yikes! I've got class in ten minutes! Have a great day!
